Background information »
This has come about following the families of 8 children who live within streets of each other in St Marys Ward, Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear who have all been declined places within their immediate catchment, Whitley Lodge.  They have also been refused a place within the surrounding THREE catchments (Southridge, Coquet and Marine). All refused on the basis of over subscription. North Tyneside Council have offered them places in a school four catchment areas away from their homes. The offered school is 2.2 miles from their home – a 50 minute walk for a adult. This problem is a growing one for our sector as more and more families are moving into the area due to the desirability of the area and the excellent schools within it. Meanwhile North Tyneside Council have approved extensive house building, including West Park and Lodge Court (built immediately next to Whitley Lodge First School). The families have all been advised they can appeal. Appeals take place just before the schools close for the summer holidays. It is easy to be ‘practical’ about these situations and you may be reading this thinking – a place has been allocated, our job is done. However, it is wrong to dismiss the value of children’s developing relationships and we should be encouraging our children to walk to school and play with friends in their own streets and gardens. May I bring your attention to North Tyneside Councils own publication dated 22nd March 2019 – https://my.northtyneside.gov.uk/news/23653/pupils-back-campaign-keep-cars-away-school-gates The families would like this matter brought to the attention of the local council and the governing bodies so that this growing problem can be prevented from happening in future years. They are petitioning for North Tyneside Council to formally discuss  Whitley Lodge First school admissions policy. They are hoping for the support of the community, to address these issues as a matter of urgency in order to prevent this from happening again.
